Waihi - Miners Reunion
The 30th annual Miners’ Reunion was held recently at Waihi. The event, initiated by community relations staff when the Martha mine reopened in the 1980s, provides the opportunity for miners from pre 1952 to get together and catch up with each other as well as view recent developments on site. The event has continued uninterrupted for 30 years.
‘As OceanaGold Waihi we are pleased to be able to invite our colleagues from an earlier era back to site’, says Senior Community Advisor Kit Wilson. ‘They are just a treasure trove of information. We find that there is always something new for us to learn from their wealth of experiences.’ This year the miners of yesteryear toured the site before having lunch with current mine staff at the Grand Junction Refinery Building. This building, one of only two of its kind left in New Zealand, was moved to its present location in 2010 and restored to a condition that should see it last another century. |
