Marty the Miner
Mac the Miner used to live in the South Island of New Zealand and work at the Macraes operation.
Slowly but surely, the warmer climate of Waihi called to him, and recently he packed himself up in a big cardboard box and headed North.
In Dunedin, he attended rugby games on bitter winter days. In Waihi, he was promised warm autumn site open days, soft spring gold festivals and a street parade through town on a glorious summer afternoon.
Mac got his name from Macraes. On arriving at Waihi, he realised that this was a little inappropriate, and changed it to Marty, after the famous Martha mine. He got a new shirt made especially, with his name embroidered on it.
Recently Marty spent a whole day in the sunshine giving balloons to children. He is looking forward to his next big outing.
Marty admits to being a little bit homesick, and says that he really misses the people at Macraes, but when it is snowing down south and he is sitting on Waihi Beach he realises he has made the right decision, and he can always go back for a visit.
Marty also has a new friend in Waihi. At the open day he met Fireman Sam. Marty and Sam don’t say much, but they look very happy together.
