Community Teamwork in Vancouver
On April 24, 2017, teammates Marcelo Ramos, Bill Gehlen and Natalia Lysova from the OceanaGold Vancouver office lend their helping hands (clad in gardening gloves) to the courtyard garden of the Yaletown House, a local 24-hours nursing facility that provides special care to seniors, including those with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.
When the Vancouver office team discussed ideas about getting involved in the local community, helping seniors through volunteering at the Yaletown House, which is only a 15 minute walk from the office, seemed like a perfect match.
After the unusually snowy Vancouver winter, renovations and restorative work of the inner courtyard at Yaletown House required major clean-up. The mighty trio rose to the challenge. After all, garden programs are one of the therapeutic activities offered to residents of the Yaletown House and it was paramount for the staff to get the garden ready for the summer.
Assisting the team were two horticulture experts, while OceanaGold representatives pruned bushes, removed debris, weeded the lawns, planted flowers, washed and reorganized furniture to ensure the garden was once again the nice looking and welcoming spot for the residents to spend their summer days.
Everyone on the team felt very proud of taking some time to assist the local community and is planning for more similar initiatives later this year.
